Dairy product sales are off by 15%
- by admin
Dairy products are now a major part of the American diet, but not everyone is eating the same.
The latest Nielsen numbers show the average American consumes about 1.5 billion servings of dairy products a year, up from 1.1 billion a year in 2009.
According to the National Dairy Council, this is the largest single segment of American dairy consumption.
Now that the sales of vegan dairy are down 15% from last year, consumers are wondering how to replace those profits.
“The fact is that people have become more aware of the health benefits of vegan food,” says Kristin Knepp, an assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Minnesota.
“That has led to a reduction in the amount of dairy-related products that we eat, but also increased awareness of vegan products.”
One potential solution is to find a healthier alternative.
Dairy products can be a high-calorie snack or a healthy protein source.
And if you are vegan, there is no need to worry about consuming more calories than you need, says Kneff.
“If you’re going to go for that protein and fat, you can do that on a vegan diet,” she says.

“Dairy products are the major part, if not the only, component of our daily diet,” says Lisa Roper, vice president of public relations for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
“There are also dairy-free alternatives and vegan products that are more economical.”

Researchers looked at how dairy consumption changed as people switched to a vegan dietary plan.
They found that dairy products were associated with a lower risk of stroke, which is a major cause of death in the United States.
A vegan, low-fat, vegetarian or vegan-only diet also had a slight effect on the risk of dying from heart disease.
Researchers also found that vegan diets also had an impact on the quality of life and longevity.
“Our results suggest that a vegan, high-fat vegan diet is associated with improved cardiac health and that an alternative to dairy may have health benefits for those who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease,” study author Susanne Hahn, an associate professor of medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told CNN.
In addition to Hahn and her colleagues, the study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The study was also co-authored by Jennifer E. Stott, M.D., a research scientist at the Pediatric Heart Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Michael W. McBride, M, a research nutritionist at the American Heart Association’s Center for Dairy and Egg Products.
This study was written by Michael H. Bischof, MPhil, MEd, and Susanne Roper.
