Why the U.S. dairy industry needs to beef up production

The dairy industry is not immune from climate change and other challenges, including droughts and a rise in antibiotic use, the Agriculture Department said in its 2017 “Dairy Supply and Demand Report.”
“Dairies are experiencing more and more challenging challenges that can impact both their operations and their overall ability to meet the needs of consumers,” the report said.
In addition to dairy production, the report called for more research and development into the production of milk, butter and cheese.
The USDA also urged the industry to develop new products that are less likely to be used in human feed, like soy milk and corn.
But the report warned that more than half of the nation’s dairy producers are not producing enough milk for the nation as a whole.
The report said the U,S.
milk supply is being stretched and is projected to fall below 20 million metric tons by 2040.
That’s more than the country’s entire population, and the agency called on dairy producers to reduce the use of feedlots, feedlady operations, and other facilities.
The agency also said dairy producers need to invest in research and testing to make their milk products safer and more efficient.
